| Severance - When Ariel goes to the surface and sees Prince Eric on his ship, she realizes that she wants to be on land because of curiousity. She felt trapped under the sea. She had been collecting human objects and artifacts in her secret cave for a long time, prior to seeing Prince Eric. |
| Outer Problem - King Triton is very protective of Ariel. He, fearing the danger of humans, absolutely forbids her from going to the surface. He destroys her cave bearing Ariel's collection of human objects and artifacts. This sends her into the arms of Ursula, the Sea Witch. |
| Inner Problem - In order to obtain legs from Ursula to become human, Ariel must trade her voice. In addition, if she doesn't kiss Prince Eric before the 3rd sunset, she (and her soul) belongs to Ursula. |
| Donor - Ursula, the Sea Witch, plays this role in the movie. Through her magic, she is able to fulfill Ariel's dream of being human. However, Ursula has different intentions--obtaining King Triton's throne through Ariel's vulnerability. |
| Threshold - This is when Ariel spends time exploring the human world on land. Things are made more complicated because she is mute. In addition, she doesn't have her father or family around; her only helpers are a seagull, a fish, and a crab. She falls more and more in love with Prince Eric. |
| Ordeal - Ursula turns herself into an attractive woman and uses Ariel's voice as her own as disguise. She puts a spell on Prince Eric that makes him fall for her and rushes him to marry Ursula. On the 3rd day, Prince Eric and Ursula's wedding is crashed by the sea and winged animals. Ariel gets her voice back, but then she turns back into a mermaid. Ursula grabs her and heads towards her lair, but King Triton stops her. In order to save Ariel, King Triton takes Ariel's place, giving up his crown and becoming Ursula's slave. |
| Incorporation - Prince Eric saves Ariel and kills Ursula. All of Ursula's slaves are free--including King Triton. King Triton realizes that being on land makes Ariel happy and that she is in love with Prince Eric. He doesn't want to let her go, but he knows he has to. Ariel finally gets her dream of being human with the acceptance of her father. |
