"Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" by Stars
God that was strange to see you again
Introduced by a friend of a friend
Smiled and said 'yes I think we've met before'
In that instant it started to pour,
Captured a taxi despite all the rain
We drove in silence across Pont Champlain
And all of the time you thought I was sad
I was trying to remember your name...
This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin
Tried to reach deep but you couldn't get in
Now you're outside me
You see all the beauty
Repent all your sin
It's nothing but time and a face that you lose
I chose to feel it and you couldn't choose
I'll write you a postcard
I'll send you the news
From a house down the road from real love...
Live through this, and you won't look back...
Live through this, and you won't look back...
Live through this, and you won't look back...
There's one thing I want to say, so I'll be brave
You were what I wanted
I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save...
This song (and band) has a very indie-rock style to it with a variety of orchestral innstruments (i.e. trumpet, violin). When I went to see the band at the beginning of October, one of the singers, Torquil Campbell, said that "this song is dedicated to the person you hate the most." Of course, he was referring to one's ex-lover. This song got me through lots of hard times with relationships.
The verses are powerful, especially the first. What is most empowering was the fact that in the message that you don't regret anything but you move on and don't look back.
The atmosphere this song gives is unexplainable (as most songs, we can't explain why or what makes us feel the way we do). I feel empowered and powerful. I can hold my head up high and be on top of the world.
At least once a day, I HAVE to listen to this song. It's not even about the relationship advice or the content/narrative of the song. It's the MUSIC part and the way it makes me feel. As I've said in my Counter-Dictionary, it's the mood/atmosphere that drives me to listen to music. Lyrics and narratives are secondary but helpful and by no means overlooked.
