Music:

An Anti-definition

According to dictionary.com, music is an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.

I think music has much more to offer than that of just "art." I think it is an expression of the state of being. My moods and dispositions greatly affect the kind of music I listen to at that moment. The sounds in a song, rather than the words, can depict how I feel. The melodies and harmonies are the main parts of the songs that drive me. Music can take you to places that you've never been and feel things you've never felt. Music can bring out emotions in you that you haven't felt in so long. Music can cause old memories to emerge, and with that, the emotions that are attached to those memories.

I've grown up with music all of my life, playing the piano at age 5. Thus, it is deeply embedded in me. Playing the piano allowed me to release my emotions. It also relieved a lot of anger and stress. It was my time to think and be free to express myself however I wanted to. When I was playing, everyone left me alone.

And because I played for competitions, every single part of the piece I was playiing was important. Everything was emphasized. My pieces were marked up by my teacher--with pencil, red pen, highlighter. At some points, you would have to strain your eyes just to read the actual music; but by that time, I had to have had the pieces memorized. There were some times I hated playing the piano because I had to spend so much time practicing, rather than playing outside like all the other kids. However, the rewards were a feeling of amazing accomplishment. Even if I didn't come out #1 at the competition, I was still pretty pleased with myself.

So I've come to appreciate classical music. Afterall, that's the music that surrounded me everyday of my life, for a while. In addition, growing up, I came to enjoy Lobo, Madonna, and the Eagles because of my father. Later on, the music I really fell in love with was the "New Wave/80s Electronica" stuff, especially by New Order, Depeche Mode, and the Cure--because of my uncles. I love rock music that incorporates classical instruments as well. Now that I reflect on why i love the music the way i do, i see that it is because i have harbored the love for music in me for pretty much all of my life. Every genre of music has something distinctly beautiful about it (although I really can't stand country and American folk music). I've also come to appreciate foreign music, although I have no idea what the words mean. But in that way, you become more focused on the music, rather than the lyrics. I love latin music, especially tango, salsa, and merengue. The selection of my musical tastes range so widely, that i couldn't tell you which genre is my favorite. Like I said in the beginning, it all depends on how I feel at that moment.

I stopped playing the piano Junior year of high school. Do I regret it? Yeah, sometimes. But it doesn't mean that once in a while when I come home to my parents' that I jam on the piano. But oftentimes I wonder what it would be like if i had continued this musical discipline...
