Community Discourse

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 5 months ago

So for my community story, I chose to look for a popular Vietnamese folk tale. I remember as a young child, my parents would sometimes tell me these old Vietnamese folk stories ORALLY passed down. Unfortunately, I don't really remember any of them (except one about an old guy peeing on a tree; then the tree gets mad and blasts to the moon, carrying him along). Many folk tales were about people and their relationships and human follies and vices. However, I focused on folk stories which presented explanations for why the world is the way it is.

For a long period of Vietnam's history, there was no formal education system. Most people were farmers and the economy was run on agriculture. Therefore, parents would tell these elaborate stories to explain the world around them. The Vietnamese culture (and the Orient) is very close to NATURE (technology was not advanced in these regions), with Buddhism being the predominant religion. There's a lot of spirituality mixed with the concepts of respect, seniority, honor, etc.

Therefore, the "community" I focused on is my Vietnamese Community, not a specific locational community, but the commonality of being of Vietnamese heritage.
