Community Discourse: Rejection

Page history last edited by Anonymous 2 yrs ago

The biggest sting about the connection of this folk tale to my life is that as I grew up, I realized my parents weren't perfect. In fact, I clashed with them a lot. You realize that they are not always right, and what they say isn't true. Sometimes I would learn something in school that would contradict what they told me before: Orality (parents) vs. Literacy (School).

Ulmer says that "it is often the case that once we become intellectually aware...we consciously reject or at least question the heroes or ideals of our community." This is true of what happened in my life. I began rejecting ideals, concepts, and values of the Vietnamese community because of how my parents applied them in raising me. A lot of these ideals and values are of the "Old World," (i.e. Men are better than women; the older you are, the wiser you are) so naturally, I rejected some of them. (i.e. Nowadays, Americans see racism as wrong, but it was the norm in our value system in the early history of the U.S.) Rejection of the norm ideas and values happens everyday since the beginning of history.
